Senior Research Fellow - Georgetown University Medical Center

The Senior Research Fellow is a position with PharmedOut, a project that researches inappropriate pharmaceutical company marketing practices and educates healthcare providers on rational prescribing that will be based in the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology at Georgetown University Medical Center. The Senior Research Fellow will be in charge of publications for the PharmedOut project with tasks including but not limited to researching and drafting peer-reviewed journal articles, op-eds, and columns for the PharmedOut newsletter, and assisting the Project Manager with publication planning. They will also specifically focus on researching pharmaceutical marketing tactics associated with opioids, dementia drugs, and other therapies. The Senior Research Fellow assists the Director and the Project Manager with supervising graduate and undergraduate students on their research projects. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Identify and investigate new industry marketing tactics, monitoring disease mongering campaigns.
  • Research and write columns and op-eds on all PharmedOut research interests, assisting the director and the project manager with the overall direction of ongoing projects.
  • Oversee the opioids research portfolio of the project, including international opioids, supervising students working on any opioid-related projects.
  • Publish consumer-facing articles on opioids, representing PharmedOut at meetings and conferences and testifying at public meetings on behalf of PharmedOut when needed.
  • Assist with managing the project's extensive publication plan, which entails keeping track of all the publications in progress.
  • Handle all aspects of manuscript preparation and submission for publication, including responding to reviewers, editing manuscripts, managing references, and tracking manuscripts.
  • Research literature for the director's presentations and PharmedOut educational activities to be published on the website.
  • Update the archive all PharmedOut publications, serving as an expert on PharmedOut's publication history.
  • Aggregate project accomplishments and news for annual reports and donor reports, assisting with identifying grant and funding opportunities and drafting grant applications for the project when necessary.


Work Interactions

The Senior Research Fellow will interact with other staff, faculty, administrative staff, physicians and other healthcare providers, graduate and medical students, interns, contractors, volunteers, government offices, NGOs, and other entities.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Master's Degree or any professional degree
  • 5 years minimum experience with previous qualitative research experience
  • Must have published peer-reviewed articles with excellent organizational skills
  • Must have excellent editing, writing, and research skills
  • Great verbal and written communication and a skilled writer able to communicate to different audiences for varied purposes
  • Ability to manage time effectively, multi-task, and problem-solve on a number of distinct tasks
  • Must be flexible and interact positively with diverse personalities
  • Must have advanced knowledge of video and audio editing software, as well as knowledge of WordPress, HTML, and any reference manager

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$22.88 - $42.10

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
